FIRST OF ALL LET ME SAY, THERE IS NO CURE FOR AUTISM! BUT STILL PEOPLE CLAIM THEY HAVE FOUND A CURE, THIS BLOG IS ABOUT A SO CALLED CURE THAT I HAVE STUMBLED ACROSS.
Secondly I have to question why you would want a cure for autism? As autism is not a disease or an illness surely there is no need for a cure. An autistic brain is not a broken brain so why would it need to be fixed?I often hear people talking about a cure for autism and find myself thinking for what purpose would you want to change the way a person thinks and understands the world unless it was for personal gain.
That is not ok and must be seen as morally wrong.
Please do not get me wrong if I could find a way to help my children experience less anxieties and less sensory overload I would take it. Interestingly this can be achieved when others change their behaviour, when society makes adjustments children and adults with autism can cope better, they do not need to be changed at all. So the answer to that must be give autistic individuals more of a voice to explain what adjustments need to be made to help society to become more inclusive. It’s not rocket science. I was absolutely horrified this week when I stumbled upon a practice called CEASE Therapy offered by some homeopathy practitioners. A therapy offering to cure the disease of autism by ridding the body of toxins caused by vaccines and other medications.
I have taken this directly from a website offering CEASE Therapy
‘So far the main obstacle to cure seems to be the lack of information about the causes of this disease. When important events in the life story of these children and their parents are overlooked or unknown, an essential key to the healing can be missed.’
How is this even allowed to be in print?
Autism is not a disease, it’s a developmental neurological condition. This should be enough of a red flag to warn people away from the practice. It has also been proven beyond doubt that vaccines are not responsible for autism and the doctor who made those claims has been struck from the medical profession.
For me the question is how can this be allowed, so many vulnerable people are at risk of being taken in by this utter nonsense not to mention how many children are at risk from being given a so called treatment that is unregulated and completely unsafe? Why is there not some kind of law that states unsafe practice with no truth must not be allowed to be found on the internet?
I have purposely not linked the site as I do not want to encourage traffic to his site via this blog, however a quick google search will bring up all the information you need on Dr. Smits and CEASE Therapy.
The Guardian have also recently reported on the work of Dr Smits. They included a comment from Carol Povey, Director of the Centre for Autism at the National Autistic Society (NAS)
“It’s absolutely appalling. As healthcare practitioners, homeopaths should still be working on evidence-based practice and looking at national guidelines. Homeopathic cures, like other bogus therapies on the internet, hoodwink new parents when they are vulnerable and can cause harm”
Please be aware when looking on line that there is no cure for autism and anyone claiming to have one is a charlatan.
